In this project, I have used a system of digital evolution to investigate a possible constraint to chains of byproduct cross-feeding. I evolved communities of cross-feeding digital organisms (self-replicating computer programs) and tested if a period of recurring perturbations could limit the length of cross-feeding chains in the communities. To understand more about the mechanisms causing chains to shorten, I tracked how the ability to consume resources evolved in lineages surviving the perturbations.
