Conclusion

This study found inter-species differences between ring‑tailed lemurs’ and red ruffed lemurs’ use of space and behavior.

It also showed that enrichment, visitor presence and meteorological conditions had a complex combined effect on the lemurs.

Enrichment proved to be a successful tool for increasing the lemurs’ presence in underutilized sectors of the outdoor enclosure, thus making the lemurs more visible to the visitors.

Moreover, meteorological conditions strongly affected the lemurs’ use of space and behavior, while visitor presence had a weaker effect.

Future enclosure designs should take all these parameters into account.
