The animals had similar activity budgets independent on exhibit category and martens in <50m² exhibits engaged significantly more in behaviours at the Tree level during daytime than did martens in >500m² exhibits.

All marten pairs spent significantly more time together than as alone. Based on this, the species should be kept in pairs since the observations showed that they are highly social.

The frequency of stereotypic behaviour did not differ significantly between exhibit categories. However, exhibits should provide a lot of climbing opportunities since the martens seem to be more comfortable at the Tree level in <50m² exhibits.

These results show that it is not the size of the exhibit that matters; instead it is how you choose to furnish it.
