Objectives of the Course

To understand and explain:

  • the general function of modern synchrotron radiation sources as well as free-electron lasers for femto-second short x-ray pulses
  • properties of the radiation such as the angular dependence, energy distribution, brilliance, polarization, time structure and coherence
  • concepts of different experimental techniques and methods for electronic structure and crystallography measurements


Be able to:

  • make estimations and simple calculations on accelerating relativistic particles and x-ray properties from insertion devices (magnetic structures)
  • estimate optical constants in absorption, reflection and transmission for x-ray optical components (gratings and mirrors) for monochomators and beamlines
