Chaenotheca phaeocephala is a crustose species that mostly grows on old oaks but also occasionally on a few other deciduous trees and rarely also on pine. Often on sun exposed parts of the trunk. It has a scattered distribution all over Sweden, locally common in the southeastern parts. Indicator of trees of high natural value in Sweden. Red listed in Norway, Finland, England and Germany.
