Seminar at KTH-MST

2 October 2015, Stockholm, Sweden

INVITED TALK
Title:  Silicon carbide based gas sensors and particle detectors for environmental control

Speaker: Prof. Anita Lloyd Spetz
Head Div. Applied Sensor Science, IFM, Linköping University, Sweden
Finland Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro), Microelectronics and Material Physics Laboratories, University of Oulu, Finland

Time:   14:30
Date:   Friday, October 2, 2015
Place: Lecture Hall Q2, Osquldas väg 10, KTH Campus

Abstract:
The division of Applied Sensor Science has developed silicon carbide based transistors as gas sensors for about 20 years. Exposure limits for toxic gases like VOCs (volatile organic compounds, e.g. formaldehyde, benzene, naphthalene) have decreased considerably recently and therefore a large part of the research is focused on ppb level detection of these gases. For this also graphene sensors and other 2D sensing layers are developed. Using temperature cycled operation and advanced data evaluation, one sensor functions as a sensor array and selectivity is largely improved.

Low temperature co-fired ceramic, LTCC, packaging is developed at University of Oulu and offers large advantages in terms of 3D design, integration of advanced functionality and fast processing. SiC based FET gas sensors are possible to integrate directly in the LTCC co-firing process at 850°C, whereby both high temperature and other advanced applications like ultra-low detection of toxic gases are greatly improved. The LTCC packaging is also used for development of particle detectors as well as packaging for an electrical method to detect toxic effect on cells by particles.

Prof. Anita Lloyd Spetz is the Opponent of Hithesh Gatty who will defend his thesis "MEMS based electrochemical gas sensors and wafer-level methods" at 10:00 the same day (Lecture Hall Q2, Osquldas väg 10, KTH Campus).

The Project: Fordonsstrategisk Forskning och Innovation (FFI)

“Kiselkarbidsensor för tillförlitligare och effektivare styrning av dieselmotorer” (Silicon carbide sensor for more reliable and efficient control of diesel engines)

The main objective of the Project is the development of materials and devices/units leading to a proof of concept for a sensor technology based on SiC-FET which is capable of cost-effectively providing sufficient accuracy, time resolution, and long term stability in order to allow high temperature measurement of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and thereby transient motor control and regulation of the exhaust after treatment system. With improved measurement/control it is expected that future regulations concerning reduction of emissions and a cleaner environment together with improved fuel economy and greater flexibility in terms of alternative fuels, and thereby reduced emissions of greenhouse gases, will be met/realized. The project is relevant to both light and heavy duty vehicles and is implemented in an integrated manner between SenSiC AB, Linköping University, KCK at Chalmers University of Technology, AB Volvo, and Scania CV AB.

WOV Working on Venus

Announcement

KTH and Linköping University have been awarded a 5-year Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation grant to develop sensors for the atmosphere on Venus, working at 460°C, 92 bar, 96.5% CO2, 3.5% N2, 1560 ppm SO2, 17 ppm CO, 20 ppm H2O, 12 ppm He, and 7 ppm Ne. Coordinator for the  project is Mikael Östling at KTH.

This project will open up completely new basic scientific research venues in many harsh environments.
