Diploma work

Plasma & Coatings Physics often offers several interesting diploma works. The diploma work can be performed in the group as a part of an existing research program or in cooperation with a company. The latter can be performed at the university or at the company. A suggestion of a diploma work can come from us, companies, or from students themselves. Please, contact Ulf Helmersson, or anyone in the group, if you are interested.

At the moment we are interested in expanding with diploma work in the following two general areas:

  • Synthesis of metal nanoparticles. The projects are rather fundamental, but the results find application in a wide range of areas, such as lithium batteries, hydrogen production and storage, solar cells, sensors to mention a few.
  • Synthesis of functional thin films using control on the atomic scale using a fundamentally new concept. This opens for new and improved thin films for many different applications.
Here is a list of some projects we are pushing:
  • Measurement of nano-particle temperature during synthesis.
  • Synthesis of particles from low melting temperature materials, such as Aluminium.
  • Computer modeling of particles in plasma.
  • Expanding the simulation code XOOPIC (developed at Berkeley) to include neutral species.
  • Nanostructure control using HiPIMS.
  • Deposition and characterization of p-type transparent conductive AgAlO2, in cooperation with Northwestern University, Illinois.
  • Growth of carbon-based coatings using HiPIMS.
  • Dens metal-coatings for a sensor applications (industrial cooperation).
Please, contact Daniel Söderström for the nanoparticle projects, and Kostas Sarakinos for the other projects, or contact Ulf Helmersson for both.
