An MD Simulation of Proton Transfer in Liquid Water

This trajectory was calculated from an MD run of H3O+ and OH- solvated by 214 water molecules. The OSS4 potential was employed. Only the water molecules involved in the proton-transfer process are shown.

(If this java animation doesn't work you might want to display this mpeg movie instead. There are also versions with larger as well as smaller pictures.)

The proton transfer mechanism obtained from the simulation is in agreement with the Grotthaus mechanism.

This animation is also available in a version where nearest-neighbours are also shown.
