During my PhD, I will be working on finding sensitive periods for stress in chickens. While effects of stress early in life have been studied extensively, we know less about the long-term effects of stress encountered later in life. In my project, the effects of stress in different life phases of chickens will be examined, focusing on behavior, physiology, gene expression and epigenetics.
I am currently also working on a project investigating the effects of different hatching times on post-hatch growth, fear behaviors and learning. Chicken eggs hatch after approximately 21 days, but in a batch of eggs, the time between hatching of the first and the last egg may be as long as 48 hours. Differences in hatching time have been shown to have an effect on post hatch growth and physiology, but very little is known about effects on behavior.
