In comparison to wild animals, domesticated animals are less aggressive, less attentive and show less fearful behaviour toward humans. The physiological stress responses of wild and domesticated animals have rarely been compared. Besides activating hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) stress also affects hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis (HPG). The aim of my current project is to compare basal steroid levels and the hormonal stress response of the ancestral Red junglefowl and the domesticated White Leghorns. Five classes of steroids (Pregnanens, Progestines, Glucocorticoids, Androgens and Estrogens) will be measured using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry methods (LC-MS/MS), before, 10 min and 60 min after a standard stress in WLs and RJFs.
