Sensor science has been a main activity at the Division of Applied Physics since 1978. The division has since then reached an internationally recognised position in the area. In order to further focus the research and to strengthen the bonds with Swedish industry, S‑SENCE was started in August 1995 and has since then attracted 28 industrial and non-university partners.

During 1995 – 2006 S-SENCE was one of the centres of VINNOVA's first centres of excellence programme. A summary report of the activities during this time is available as a pdf file.  More reports from this time can be found on the web site of VINNOVA where also general information about the Competence Centres Programme 1995-2007 is available. Since 2006 S-SENCE has been running both basic research projects with academic partners and more applied projects in collaboration with industry. The S‑SENCE group has experience in research and applications concerning gas phase sensing, liquid phase sensing and biosensing and also in sensor data evaluation techniques.
